Friends of Swansea Museum

The RISW is committed to help and support Swansea Museum in a number of ways.

  • Act as ambassadors for the Museum, helping to raise its profile and make it known to a wider audience:
    • In 2014 the RISW hosted the national annual conference of the British Association of Friends of Museums, entertaining delegates from across Britain and introducing them to Swansea’s cultural scene.
    • We hold a yearly programme of public lectures in the Museum, covering a variety of topics to appeal to a wide range of people.
  • Contribute to the costs of major conservation projects, for example, we have paid for:
    • Specialist repair and rebinding of important books in the Museum Library
    • Conservation and display of bones of the extinct Moa bird.
  • Purchase items for the Museum’s collections, such as:
    • Paintings of local landscapes or by local artists.
    • Pieces of porcelain and pottery from the local Cambrian, Ynysmeudwy and Glamorgan Potteries.
  • Raise funds and seek grant aid towards major Museum projects.
  • Give practical help and expert knowledge to Museum:
    • RISW members are encouraged to join the Museum’s volunteer scheme, helping to record and care for the collections, assisting with visitor services, exhibitions and special events. Contact Swansea Museum for more information on 01792 653763.
    • RISW members with specialist knowledge or skills can help the Museum staff to respond to queries, identify objects or work on specific projects.
